Happy Chinese New Year!

I'm not sure how one wishes well for the Chinese New Year in a culturally correct manner, but I most certainly wish all 1 billion 300 million 44 thousand 5 hundred and fifty-five PLUS people living in China as well as the thousands (? more?) of Chinese immigrants around the world a WONDERFUL year of the OX and lots of health, happiness and prosperity!! I have never been to China, but friends in the Fashion industry who have spent time there say that New Year celebrations on the mainland are an experience never to forget. After all, where did fireworks come from again? ;-D Fashion industry professionals integrate the Chinese New Year into their time-and-action calendars unfailingly, as it is a show-topping holiday for those who manufacture there (and really, who doesn't?)

My favorite Chinese-American designer is Michelle Tan, a friend of mine who is based in Chicago. Her boutique on Damen street reminds me of the one my husband and I had in Dusseldorf in Germany: simple, and sleek, putting the focus on the clothes. Her aesthetic is so interesting - beautiful fabrics and details and the most modern of silhouettes. Michelle told me she doesn't look at fashion magazines or the internet sites at all. Her greatest inspiration is in the life around her - people and places! Her new handbag line is flying off of the shelves....

If all goes well, this time next year Lasell faculty and students will be preparing to spend 10 days working with design students at Shandong University of Art and Design during Spring Break 2010. Lasell leaders hosted a delegation from Shandong University of Art and Design last fall including the school's president Pan Lusheng. I was present when the delegation met with President Michael B. Alexander, and other school leaders to sign an agreement to develop exchanges.
