Rick Owens: First Menswear show in Paris

You've got to look at the new menswear line from Rick Owens. He is such a trip (does anyone say that any more?) Goth meets Haute Couture in the most intense and constant way. I mean, Goth has seen its revivals from designers like Galliano and Westwood, but Rick Owens, a former full-time (!) Goth, manages to infuse it into his work in a way that works for a wider audience. I met Rick and even his parents back in 2003 when he was hired by Revillion, the fur company, to create a line for the Haute Couture. I was there with a group of students and we got to work back stage to dress the super models. What an incredible experience! It was awe-inspiring to watch Anna Wintour talk with Rick about his collection. Now that collection was not very goth, now that I think about it, but it was VERY creative...

The menswear collection is really incredible - tunics, skirts, and even a full-length dress on a man looking incredibly masculine. Truly new proportions and shapes for men. Menswear has so much room for creativity! If you're not ready to go to those lengths (!) he includes some wonderful coats and pants, and his boots are just incredible. ...Although I love the looks, I keep trying to imagine where one would see a guy dressed like that walk down the street outside of certain areas of Paris, London, Tokyo, Milan, Amsterdam, Antwerp, New York, LA... well I guess that is a rather long list if you think about it.

Oh, and one can't talk about Goth and Fashion without mentioning the exhibit at the Museum at FIT. We went to NY with students last November and saw the exhibit. Fantastic. Valerie Steel rocks! It's only there until the end of February, so if you get a chance it is a MUST-see. Of course, be sure to notice the pieces by Rick Owens....
